A Wichita woman will serve just over three years in prison after a tragic shooting that left a young boy dead when a child found her unsecured firearm.
25-year-old Tasha Dillard was sentenced to 37 months in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter and six counts of aggravated child endangerment in the death of 7-year-old Davion Gunter.
The fatal shooting occurred on March 16, 2025, at Dillard’s apartment during a small gathering. Investigators said Dillard and several adults were drinking tequila shots in a car outside while seven children were left unsupervised inside.
While playing in the apartment, the children found Dillard’s loaded handgun in her unattended purse on the kitchen counter. Believing it to be a toy, they began pretending to play with it when it discharged, striking Gunter in the forearm and chest.
Emergency crews responded and rushed the boy to the hospital, but he later died from his injuries.
Dillard initially told police there were no firearms in her home, but later admitted to owning the gun when confronted with evidence. Prosecutors said her negligence directly led to the child’s death.
Originally charged with first-degree murder, Dillard’s case was reduced following a plea agreement. The court noted her remorse and cooperation during the investigation.
“This was a devastating and preventable tragedy,” a Sedgwick County prosecutor said. “It underscores the importance of securing firearms, especially in homes with children.”
Dillard will serve her sentence in state prison and remain under supervision following her release.
