WESTBROOK, Maine — The Westbrook community is mourning the loss of a well-known local personality affectionately known as “Hawkins,” who passed away recently following a brief battle with cancer.
Hawkins, easily recognized by his long black leather duster and slicked-back hair, was a familiar sight around town. He often sang, danced, and spent time along the River Walk, where he enjoyed playing chess and chatting with locals.
Residents and local business owners say Hawkins embodied the spirit of the community — kind, humble, and always willing to lend a hand. Sue and a friend from the local shop where Hawkins frequently stopped by shared heartfelt words about his passing.
“He would come in to sweep floors or take out the trash in exchange for food or bottles,” they said. “He was always willing to work for whatever we could give him. He was a fixture in Westbrook that will certainly be missed.”
Friends remember Hawkins not only for his distinctive look but for his easygoing nature and the joy he brought to others through music, laughter, and small acts of kindness.
“RIP Hawkins,” one post read. “I’m happy you’re no longer in pain, my friend.”
Community members are planning to gather in the coming days to celebrate his life and honor the memory of a man who left an enduring mark on Westbrook’s streets and hearts.
