The entertainment industry is mourning the loss of Dondon Nakar, a beloved matinee idol of the 1970s, who passed away quietly on November 1 at his home in Mandaluyong City. He was 66 years old.
According to his wife, Candy Nakar, the former actor died of cardiac arrest.
Born Serafin Guillermo L. Nakar, Dondon rose to fame as one of the teenage idols who followed the wave of superstar Nora Aunor in the early 1970s. He became a household name as one of the hosts of the hit TV variety show Apat na Sikat, alongside Arnold Gamboa, Winnie Santos, and Maribel Aunor.
Transitioning into acting, Dondon starred in several memorable Filipino films including Binhi, Menor de Edad, Ang Babaeng Hinugot sa Aking Tadyang, and Nang Bumuka ang Sampagita. As a child actor, he also gained recognition for his role as Ding opposite Vilma Santos’ Darna in one of the franchise’s classic adaptations.
In a statement, the Nakar family expressed both sorrow and gratitude:
“The family is saddened by their loss but also rejoices that Dondon is now with the Lord.”
Dondon’s remains will lie in state at Mount Carmel Church in New Manila, Quezon City, on November 5 and 6, from 2 to 9 p.m.
He is survived by his wife, Candy, and their son, Nathan.
