In a heartbreaking incident that has shocked residents of Soweto, one of a pair of identical twins was fatally shot during an apparent robbery attempt, while his brother remains in critical condition in hospital. According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello, the twins, aged 28 and both employed as security guards, were walking home from a late shift around 10:30 PM when they were approached by two armed suspects.
The attackers demanded their valuables, including cell phones and wallets.
A scuffle ensued when one twin resisted, leading to gunfire.
The first twin, identified as Thabo Nkosi, was shot in the chest and died at the scene despite efforts by paramedics from Netcare 911.
His brother, Sipho Nkosi, sustained gunshot wounds to the leg and abdomen and was rushed to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. As of Thursday morning, Sipho was listed in stable but critical condition.
Eyewitnesses described hearing multiple shots and seeing the suspects flee on foot toward a nearby taxi rank. No arrests have been made, but police have recovered two spent 9mm casings at the scene and are reviewing CCTV footage from local businesses.

The twins’ mother, Nomvula Nkosi, 52, expressed profound grief outside the family home. “They were inseparable since birth—my boys, always looking out for each other. Now one is gone, and the other might not make it. Why do this to young men just trying to survive?” she told Daily Sun reporters through tears.
The brothers, who shared not only their looks but also a passion for soccer, had recently celebrated their birthday together. Neighbors have rallied to support the family, launching a community fund to cover medical and funeral costs.
