A quiet Hampshire community has been left heartbroken after 51-year-old Nigel Key was found dead in his Totton home on October 16, 2025, just weeks after the passing of his wife from cancer.
Emergency services were called to the property following reports of a serious assault. Despite attempts to save him, Key was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have since launched a murder investigation, describing the incident as “deeply tragic” given the family’s recent loss.
Authorities quickly arrested a 31-year-old man from Totton on suspicion of murder. He was taken to hospital for treatment and later detained under the UK Mental Health Act after an assessment by medical professionals. Police have not yet released the suspect’s name.
Neighbors and friends have described Key as a devoted father and a kind, generous neighbor, saying his sudden death has left the community in shock. “Nigel had already been through so much losing his wife,” one resident said. “To have this happen now is just unbearable.”
Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing and are appealing for anyone with information to contact Hampshire Constabulary.
As tributes continue to pour in, locals are remembering Nigel Key as a man who brought warmth and compassion to those around him — a devoted husband and father taken far too soon.
