Authorities in Unity State are investigating the death of a 39-year-old man who reportedly took his own life following a dispute with his brother over plans to travel to the United States.
Police identified the deceased as Mayiel Kuol, who was found dead early Sunday morning at his home in Leer County. According to Brig. Gen. Tor Thor, Director General of the Leer County Police, the incident occurred around 6:17 a.m., and investigators determined that Kuol died by hanging.
A note found on Kuol’s smartphone revealed his desire to leave South Sudan and his distress after his elder brother refused to help him with his travel plans.
“The investigators confirmed the cause of death after he wrote a letter before his death inside the house,” Gen. Thor said.
Police said Kuol had been employed by a local organization, earning a salary of about $1,000 per month, though officials did not identify the employer. The case remains under investigation.
Gen. Thor described the death as a tragic loss for the community. “It is very unfortunate indeed, because when an educated person takes his own life without illness or external cause, it is sad news,” he said.
Members of the local community expressed shock and sadness over the incident. Manyang Puok, a representative of the Children Charity Organization in Unity State, called the act “deeply unfortunate” and urged young people not to resort to self-harm.
“Committing suicide is not a solution for youth,” Puok said. “This is not part of South Sudanese culture.”
Leer County, one of the regions hardest hit by years of conflict and poverty, continues to face limited job opportunities, economic hardship, and insecurity, challenges that authorities say have contributed to growing despair among young people.
