Authorities are investigating a tragic case after a newborn was discovered dead in the trunk of a car on Pittsburgh’s North Side late Friday night.
According to police, the investigation began after a woman from Ohio Township arrived at a local Pittsburgh hospital showing signs of having recently given birth—but without her baby. Hospital staff said the woman left against medical advice before explaining the child’s whereabouts.
Following further questioning by detectives, police were directed to a vehicle parked on the 1400 block of Federal Street. Inside the trunk, officers found the infant wrapped in clothing and placed inside a plastic bag. Medics were called to the scene and pronounced the newborn deceased.
Investigators later executed a search warrant at a residence on the 100 block of Marshall Avenue, where the woman was known to spend time. Evidence found inside indicated that a recent birth had occurred there, police said.
The woman is currently receiving medical treatment and is expected to be interviewed by detectives once she is cleared by hospital staff.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office has taken custody of the infant’s body and will determine the official cause and manner of death.
As of Saturday morning, no charges have been filed. Police say the investigation remains active and ongoing
