A Milwaukee man has been found guilty of first-degree intentional homicide in the fatal shooting of a convenience store clerk during a heated argument over a pizza order last year.
Charles Leggett, 38, was convicted this week for the October 19, 2024 killing at Action Food and Liquor, located on the city’s north side.
According to court documents and police testimony, Leggett became enraged after accusing the store clerk of preparing his pizza without wearing gloves — calling the act “unsanitary.” Surveillance footage presented at trial showed Leggett arguing with the employee before pulling out a firearm and shooting him once across the counter.
The victim, identified as Owies (full name withheld by authorities), collapsed behind the counter and later died from his injuries despite emergency response efforts.
After the shooting, prosecutors said Leggett fled the scene, discarded his clothing, and hid at a friend’s home. When later questioned by detectives, he allegedly confessed, saying, “I shot him.”
Following several days of testimony, a Milwaukee County jury returned a guilty verdict on charges of first-degree intentional homicide and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Sentencing is scheduled for a later date. Leggett faces life imprisonment.
