A man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of Mary Gonzales, just days after he was released from jail on a personal bond for an unrelated offense.
According to the Austin Police Department, Enrique Gomez-Urbina was taken into custody on October 8 after investigators identified him as a suspect in Gonzales’ killing.
The Timeline
Court documents show that on October 5, Gomez-Urbina was pulled over by Austin police for running a stop sign. Officers said he admitted to drinking and attempted to flee the scene. A Glock 27 handgun with an extended magazine, ammunition, and an open alcohol container were found inside his car. He was arrested and charged with resisting arrest, a misdemeanor.
Less than 24 hours later, on October 6 at 7:42 a.m., police responded to a scene where Mary Gonzales was found dead from gunshot wounds. That same evening, at 9:14 p.m., a magistrate judge approved Gomez-Urbina’s release on a personal bond for the resisting arrest charge.
Two days later, on October 8, the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Gonzales’ identity, and detectives issued a first-degree murder warrant for Gomez-Urbina. He was arrested later that day by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force with help from the U.S. Marshals Service.
During the operation, officers also arrested Jesus Llamas-Yanez, who is reportedly wanted in Mexico on a weapons charge. Authorities said his arrest was unrelated to the Gonzales murder case and that he is being held for extradition.
Investigation Continues
Gomez-Urbina is now facing a first-degree murder charge and remains in custody in the Travis County Jail. Officials have not released further details about the motive or the circumstances leading up to Gonzales’ death.
