Cleto Escobedo III, the longtime bandleader and saxophonist for Jimmy Kimmel Live!, has passed away unexpectedly at the age of 59, leaving behind a legacy of music, laughter, and friendship that spanned decades.
The news was confirmed on Tuesday, sending shockwaves through the entertainment community. Escobedo had been a fixture on late-night television since the ABC talk show’s debut in 2003, leading the house band Cleto and the Cletones alongside host Jimmy Kimmel, his lifelong friend.
Kimmel delivered an emotional monologue on Monday night, paying tribute to Escobedo and recalling their shared history that began nearly 50 years ago when the two grew up next door to each other in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Cleto wasn’t just my bandleader — he was my brother,” Kimmel said, visibly moved. “We met when we were kids, and we’ve been together almost every day since. He made everything brighter — every song, every show, every moment.”
