Irish Community Mourns Sudden Death of Listowel Native Serena Downey, 29, in Australia

The town of Listowel is in mourning following the sudden death of Serena Downey, a 29-year-old Irish woman remembered for her warmth, kindness, and hard work. Serena, who had been living and working in Perth, Australia, passed away unexpectedly on October 20, 2025, leaving her family, friends, and thousands of social media followers heartbroken.

Originally from Feale Drive, Listowel, Serena moved to Australia in 2020, where she built a successful career as a plant operator at a mining site in the Mid West region. Her positive energy and authenticity shone through her TikTok videos, where she shared glimpses of her life working in the mines and inspired more than 21,000 followers.

News of her untimely passing prompted a massive wave of support, as loved ones launched a GoFundMe campaign to help bring Serena home and cover repatriation expenses. The fundraiser quickly surpassed expectations, raising over $148,000 AUD (€83,600) from friends, colleagues, and supporters around the world.

Serena’s family traveled to Perth last week to attend a memorial service held in her adopted home, where friends and coworkers paid tribute to her vibrant spirit. Her remains have since been repatriated to Ireland, where final arrangements are now complete.

The Downey family has confirmed that Serena’s funeral will take place on Wednesday, November 11, at St. Mary’s Church in Listowel, followed by interment at St. John Paul II Cemetery, Ballybunion Road.

In a heartfelt statement, Serena’s loved ones described her as “a vibrant, kind, and hardworking young woman whose light touched everyone she met.”

The local community has expressed deep condolences to the Downey family as they prepare to say their final goodbyes to one of Listowel’s beloved daughters.
