Hampton County Sheriff’s Office Investigating Deadly Shooting Near Whippy Swamp Bridge

The Hampton County Sheriff’s Office, along with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Crime Scene Unit, is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday on Altman Road near the Whippy Swamp Bridge.

Deputies and first responders were called to the scene after reports of gunfire in the area. Upon arrival, authorities found two people suffering from gunshot wounds.

One of the victims, identified as Boynton Woodrow O’Brien, 51, of Hampton, was pronounced dead at the scene by Hampton County EMS. The second victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. Their current condition has not been released.

Hampton County Coroner Anna Fields confirmed that O’Brien’s family has been notified. Sheriff Anthony Russell and the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to the victim’s family, saying their thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.

Investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident and say there is no ongoing threat to public safety. The Whippy Swamp Bridge, which was temporarily closed during the investigation, has since reopened to traffic.
