Tributes are pouring in following the passing of Ole Jørgen Hammeken, the renowned Greenlandic explorer, actor, and cultural ambassador, who died just after midnight on November 7, 2025, at the age of 69.
Born on June 25, 1956, Hammeken dedicated his life to celebrating and preserving Inuit culture while fostering understanding between Indigenous traditions and the wider world.
A true polymath, Hammeken was best known for his polar expeditions, his advocacy for Arctic communities, and his acclaimed performance in the 2009 film Le Voyage d’Inuk (The Journey of Inuk), which brought Greenlandic stories and landscapes to international audiences.
Beyond his achievements in exploration and film, Hammeken was also a spiritual and creative collaborator. He recently co-created Flights of the Angakok — a powerful musical and ritual performance rooted in Arctic wisdom and ancestral healing.
In a heartfelt tribute, one of his collaborators described him as “a remarkable human being — an explorer, actor, and bridge between worlds. Without his voice and profound connection to his ancestors, our work could never have been born.”
A special performance of Flights of the Angakok was held today in Hammeken’s memory, honoring his enduring spirit, wisdom, and laughter — qualities that inspired everyone who crossed his path.
“Ole’s journey now continues across the unseen skies of the soul,” his friend added. “May his spirit find peace and light on the eternal path.”
