The University of Iowa community is mourning the loss of Aiden Orion Washburn, a beloved former Hawkeye Kid Captain who inspired thousands with his strength and optimism while battling a rare congenital heart condition. Aiden passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He was just 9 years old.
Aiden, from Keokuk, Iowa, was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a serious condition that affects normal blood flow through the heart. Despite undergoing multiple open-heart surgeries and ongoing treatment, Aiden’s courage, humor, and love for life made him a symbol of resilience for families across the state.
In 2024, Aiden was selected as a Hawkeye Kid Captain, a University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital program that highlights young patients who have overcome serious medical challenges. He was recognized during a Hawkeye football game, where fans cheered for him from both the stadium and the children’s hospital across the street.
Aiden was known for his bright personality and sense of adventure. He loved collecting sneakers, learning about sharks and marine life, making funny videos for his YouTube channel “Aiden’s Funny Videos,” and spending time with his younger brother. Earlier this year, his Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World was described by his family as a dream come true.
His family released a heartfelt tribute, saying:
“Aiden’s laughter, love, and light will always be part of us. He will be forever smiling, forever loved, forever in our hearts.”
Faith communities and neighbors in Keokuk, as well as staff and families at the Stead Family Children’s Hospital, have shared condolences and memories online, remembering Aiden as “a brave soul with a heart full of joy.”
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family in the coming days.
