Forest High School Senior Struck and Killed While Walking to Bus Stop in Ocala

Authorities are investigating a tragic accident that claimed the life of a Forest High School senior early Monday morning in Ocala.

According to the Ocala Police Department, officers responded to reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle near the 1900 block of NW Old Blitchton Road just after 6:00 a.m. Investigators say the victim, 18-year-old Shannon Rushing, was walking to her school bus stop when she was hit by an SUV.

Emergency crews arrived quickly and transported Rushing to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The driver, identified only as a woman in her 60s, remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. Authorities have not said whether any charges will be filed at this time.

Forest High School officials described Rushing as a bright, outgoing student who was deeply loved by her teachers and classmates. Counselors have been made available on campus to support grieving students and staff.

The Ocala Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including lighting conditions, speed, and visibility at the time of the incident.

Community members have expressed heartbreak over the loss, with many calling for increased safety measures along school routes to prevent future tragedies.
