A domestic disturbance turned deadly early Sunday morning when a father allegedly shot and killed his own son outside an apartment complex in Buckhead, authorities said.
According to the Atlanta Police Department (APD), officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute between a woman and her boyfriend at an apartment complex on Pharr Road. While officers were speaking with the woman, the situation escalated dramatically when the boyfriend’s father arrived at the scene.
Police say 54-year-old Durante Tolliver allegedly opened fire on his son, 32-year-old Durante Schofield, in the parking lot, shooting him as many as 12 times.
Schofield was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency aid efforts. Investigators believe the woman, who had been in a dispute with Schofield, contacted Tolliver before the shooting.
Tolliver was taken into custody and has been charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the fatal shooting. Police have not released additional details about what may have prompted the violent confrontation.
