The Dorchester County community is reeling after a tragic early-morning crash claimed the lives of two 23-year-olds on U.S. Highway 15, just south of Saint George.
The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Samuel Dantzler, of Harleyville, and Brianna Wiles, of Round O. Both were pronounced dead at the scene after their vehicle veered off the highway and struck several trees around 2 a.m. Sunday.
Emergency responders from Dorchester County Fire and EMS arrived within minutes but were unable to save the pair. Authorities say the South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash, including whether excessive speed or road conditions played a role.
Witnesses reported seeing debris scattered along the shoulder, and traffic was temporarily halted as crews worked to clear the scene.
Friends and relatives have described both victims as vibrant, kindhearted individuals who brought joy to everyone around them.
Samuel Dantzler was remembered as a cheerful Harleyville native with a passion for fishing and spending time outdoors. Brianna Wiles, known for her compassion and positivity, was described as “a light in every room” by those who knew her.
The tragedy has shaken the close-knit communities of Harleyville and Round O, where grief-stricken residents have gathered to support the victims’ families. A growing roadside memorial now marks the crash site, adorned with flowers, candles, and heartfelt messages.
“They were both so young and full of promise,” said one family friend. “Our hearts are broken, but we’ll hold on to the love and memories they left behind.”
Local churches are planning vigils this week, and grief counselors have been made available for those affected. Funeral arrangements for both victims are expected to be announced soon.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to urge drivers to remain cautious, particularly on rural routes where nighttime visibility is limited.
