The Dallas Cowboys community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Marshawn Kneeland, a 24-year-old defensive standout whose rising NFL career was deeply intertwined with the memory of his late mother.
Kneeland’s death was confirmed on Thursday by team officials, who expressed shock and sadness at the sudden loss of a “remarkable young man, teammate, and son.”
Before achieving his dream of playing in the NFL, Kneeland endured a devastating tragedy — the passing of his mother, Wendy, in February 2024, while he was participating in the NFL Combine. Her death deeply affected him, but her love and belief in his potential continued to drive him forward.
“She helped me so much when I was young,” Kneeland said in a 2024 interview. “I always told her, ‘I’m going to the NFL,’ and I made it. She’s still with me, watching over me.”
Kneeland honored his mother’s memory in a touching way — by wearing a necklace containing her ashes during every game.
Two months after her passing, his lifelong dream came true when the Cowboys selected him in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. During his rookie season, Kneeland appeared in 11 games, recording 14 tackles and earning widespread praise for his determination and work ethic.
Just two days before his untimely death, he celebrated a career highlight — scoring his first NFL touchdown during Monday Night Football after recovering a blocked punt in the end zone. His exuberant smile during the moment touched fans nationwide.
“Marshawn’s passion for football and his devotion to his family inspired everyone who knew him,” the Cowboys said in a statement. “Our hearts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
