The Chelsea community is mourning the passing of Robert Harlow “Bob” Benedict Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, teacher, and school principal, who passed away on Monday, October 27, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 96 years old.
Born on October 21, 1929, in Evanston, Illinois, to Rev. Robert Harlow and Opal Sarah (Seeber) Benedict Sr., Bob dedicated his life to education and community service.
He began his career as a fifth-grade teacher before serving as principal at North Elementary School for 17 years and later at South Elementary School for seven years. Colleagues and former students remember him as a compassionate educator who made learning engaging and meaningful.
Outside the classroom, Bob was known for his love of storytelling, music, and the outdoors. He played the “bones,” enjoyed beekeeping, woodworking, and traveling, and was a longtime member of the Chelsea First United Methodist Church, where he participated in both the chancel and bell choirs. He was also an active member of the Chelsea Kiwanis Club.
Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, Gaynor F. Tomlinson, in 1968, and his second wife, Carol Ann Young, in 2015.
He is survived by his children Bruce (Sue) Young of San Antonio, Texas; Robert (Carol) Benedict III of Chelsea; Michal Ann (Bob) Enders of Middleville; Sandra (Joseph) Lantis of Chelsea; and Susan (Bryan) Young-Markey of Prescott, Arizona. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, his sister June (Clare) Warren of Minnesota, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service honoring Bob’s life will be held on Friday, October 31, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Chelsea First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Joy Barrett officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Chelsea. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 30, from 5–7 p.m., and again on Friday from 10–11 a.m. before the service.
