The Harlingen medical community is mourning the loss of Dr. Cecil Simmons, MD, a beloved physician and community leader who passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, shortly after celebrating his 91st birthday on October 10.
Dr. Simmons lived a remarkable life devoted to family, medicine, and community service. Over the course of 50 years of medical practice at SBMA, he cared for three generations of patients—earning the respect and affection of colleagues and families alike.
In addition to his lifelong dedication to medicine, Dr. Simmons took great pride in his associations with SBMA doctors and staff, First Community Bank directors and officers, and Harlingen Medical Center administration and physicians. Those who knew him describe him as a man of integrity, compassion, and unwavering commitment to excellence in patient care.
“He lived a wonderful life and took care of his family, friends, and so many others,” his family shared in a heartfelt statement. “He was proud of his colleagues and the many people he worked alongside throughout his career. Quite a legacy. He will be deeply missed.”
Plans for a memorial service are currently being arranged, with details to be announced in the coming days.
Dr. Simmons leaves behind a legacy defined by service, compassion, and love — one that will continue to inspire the community he so faithfully served.
