An Airman who was found dead earlier this month at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming had been under investigation for an on-duty shooting that prompted the temporary withdrawal of a service weapon across multiple Air Force commands, officials confirmed.
The Air Force said the Airman, whose identity has not been publicly released pending family notification, was connected to a recent incident involving the discharge of an M18 Sig Sauer pistol while on duty. The shooting, which occurred under unspecified circumstances, did not result in any other injuries but led the Air Force Security Forces to suspend use of the weapon as a precaution.
Both Air Force Global Strike Command and Air Force Security Forces Command briefly ordered units to pull the M18 from service while safety inspections and procedural reviews were conducted.
The Airman was later found deceased on base earlier this month. Officials have not disclosed the cause of death but said no foul play is suspected.
In a statement, base officials expressed condolences to the Airman’s family and unit, noting that mental health and support services have been made available to fellow service members.
The incident remains under review by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and local authorities.
