Nearly five years after the heartbreaking loss of her 22-month-old son, Zayvier, a Michigan mother is turning her pain into purpose by sharing a message of awareness and prevention.
In November 2020, little Zayvier had just transitioned from his crib to a toddler bed. His mother, Fatima, recalls the unimaginable moment she found him unresponsive — wedged between the wall and his bed. Despite immediate efforts to save him, doctors confirmed that he had died from asphyxiation.
Experts say even a small gap — more than three inches — between a mattress and a wall can create a deadly entrapment hazard for infants and toddlers.
Now, as the fifth anniversary of his passing approaches, Fatima is urging parents and caregivers to take a few minutes to review safe-sleep guidelines. She’s created an informational flyer outlining crucial safety tips to help prevent similar tragedies.
“Even one life saved in Zayvier’s memory means his light continues to shine,” Fatima said.
Zayvier is survived by his identical twin brother, Alexander, and two other siblings. Fatima, who serves as Vice President of Our Little Angels Inc. in Hastings, continues her advocacy through the organization — which provides funeral assistance and emotional support for grieving families.
The group’s mission is rooted in hope, offering comfort to those navigating profound loss and reminding them that, as Fatima says, “light can prevail.”
