Authorities have identified the woman killed in a deadly shooting Wednesday morning in Horace as 23-year-old Sakeena Khaadi, as her boyfriend, 21-year-old Derrick Lobbo, remains in custody in connection to the incident.
According to Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner, deputies responded to reports of a possible shooting at the Carlson Place Apartments on Jacks Way shortly before 8 a.m. on November 5. A male caller told dispatchers it was “unknown if she was hurt,” while background audio captured a man yelling for help.
When deputies arrived, they found two residents performing CPR on Khaadi in the hallway outside her apartment, Unit 310. Emergency personnel took over life-saving efforts, but despite their attempts, Khaadi was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound.
Within 25 minutes of the initial 911 call, officers located and detained Lobbo outside the apartment complex after he appeared at a nearby clinic seeking help and then ran down the street shouting.
During a safety check of the apartment, deputies discovered Lobbo’s 2-year-old son “in very close proximity to a firearm.” The child has since been placed in the care of his paternal grandfather with the assistance of child protective services.
Lobbo is currently being held on preliminary charges of reckless endangerment and child neglect, with additional charges expected. Cass County State’s Attorney Kim Hegvik stated that her office is carefully reviewing all evidence before filing formal charges.
“We want to make sure that we are fully reviewing the entire investigation to make sure that we get it right,” Hegvik said, noting that Lobbo is expected to appear before a judge on November 7 for a probable cause hearing to determine bail.
Sheriff Jahner confirmed the investigation remains active and ongoing, with forensic analysis and witness interviews still underway.
