Authorities have identified the victim in a fatal UPS cargo plane crash near Louisville International Airport as 43-year-old Sean Richardson, a longtime UPS pilot from Jeffersonville, Indiana.
According to officials, the crash occurred early Tuesday morning when the aircraft, a Boeing 757 cargo jet, went down shortly after takeoff. The plane was en route to Dallas-Fort Worth when it reportedly experienced mechanical issues moments after departure.
Emergency crews responded to the fiery wreck in a wooded area less than two miles from the runway. Richardson, who was the sole occupant on board, was pronounced dead at the scene. No injuries were reported on the ground.
UPS released a statement expressing its condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague, Captain Sean Richardson. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and coworkers during this difficult time.”
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are leading the investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports indicate that Richardson had more than 15 years of flying experience with UPS and was highly respected by colleagues.
Witnesses near the crash site reported hearing a loud boom followed by flames shooting into the air. Crews worked through the morning to extinguish the fire and secure the wreckage.
Officials say a full report on the cause of the crash could take several months to complete.
