A tragic overnight plane crash involving a UPS cargo aircraft in Kentucky has left at least nine people dead, according to Governor Andy Beshear, who described the scene as “devastating.”
Emergency crews launched a major search and rescue operation late Tuesday after reports of the crash came in just outside Louisville International Airport. By early Wednesday morning, authorities confirmed that seven victims were initially found dead, and two more bodies were later recovered as search efforts continued.
“This is a heartbreaking day for Kentucky,” Gov. Beshear said during a Wednesday morning briefing. “We have lost members of our community, and teams are still working tirelessly to locate anyone who may have survived.”
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have joined local authorities in investigating the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports indicate the plane may have encountered technical difficulties shortly after takeoff, though officials caution it is too early to determine the cause.
Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft descending rapidly before catching fire upon impact in a wooded area near Outer Loop and Preston Highway. The debris field reportedly spans several hundred yards.
UPS issued a brief statement early Wednesday expressing deep sorrow over the loss:
“We are heartbroken by this tragedy and extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of our colleagues. We are cooperating fully with investigators.”
As of Wednesday morning, crews remain on scene, combing through wreckage and working to secure the area. Officials have asked the public to avoid the crash site.
Governor Beshear has directed state resources to assist in recovery efforts and said flags across Kentucky will be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims.
