Authorities have arrested a Johnston County man after deputies discovered the bodies of two young children inside the trunk of a car early Monday morning.
According to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call around 4 a.m. after a man arrived at a local hospital with serious injuries. Investigators later identified him as Yoni Aguilar, the children’s father. When deputies located his vehicle parked outside the hospital, they made the horrifying discovery — the bodies of his two children inside the trunk.
Sheriff Steve Bizzell confirmed that Aguilar has been charged with two counts of murder. Investigators believe the deaths occurred before Aguilar drove to the hospital, though the motive and exact timeline remain under investigation.
“This is one of the most heartbreaking cases we’ve seen,” Sheriff Bizzell said. “Two innocent lives were taken, and our hearts go out to the family and community.”
The children’s names and ages have not yet been publicly released as authorities notify next of kin. The sheriff’s office has also requested privacy for surviving family members as the investigation continues.
Aguilar remains in custody without bond. Autopsies for both children are scheduled at the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office.
