Two Texas women have been arrested and charged after police say they physically abused and restrained a 12-year-old girl from Honduras who had entered the United States as an unaccompanied minor.
According to investigators, the victim arrived in the U.S. in 2014 and was placed in the care of relatives under the federal sponsor system. Over the years, authorities say the girl suffered ongoing mistreatment and neglect at the hands of her sponsors, identified as Brenda Garcia and Tania Garcia.
Police allege the sisters restrained the child, denied her basic needs, and subjected her to repeated abuse. The victim eventually managed to escape the home and notify law enforcement, prompting an immediate investigation.
Both Brenda and Tania Garcia were arrested and are now facing multiple charges, including child abuse and unlawful restraint. They are being held in local custody pending further court hearings.
The child has since been placed in protective care and is receiving medical and emotional support.
Officials say the case has renewed scrutiny of the federal sponsorship program for unaccompanied minors, with advocates calling for stronger safeguards and regular welfare checks to prevent similar cases of abuse.
The investigation remains ongoing.
