The Chesterfield community is mourning the loss of Johnny Mazza Jr., a respected business owner, aviator, and civic leader who died in a UTV (utility task vehicle) accident on Saturday.
According to the Chesterfield County Police Department, the crash occurred in the 20300 block of Little Road. Authorities said there are no signs of foul play, and detectives have been assigned to conduct a standard follow-up investigation in coordination with the medical examiner’s office.
Mazza, who carried on the family legacy as owner of Medallion Pools, was deeply rooted in the community. His father, Johnny Mazza Sr., founded the business in 1960, and under Johnny Jr.’s leadership, it grew into a trusted name in the Richmond and Chesterfield areas, serving generations of local families.
Beyond business, Mazza’s passion for aviation defined much of his life. He served on multiple boards, including the Virginia Aviation Board, the Virginia Transportation Safety Board, the Chesterfield County Airport Advisory Board, and the Dinwiddie Airport & Industrial Authority. His contributions were recognized in 2015 when he was inducted into the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame.
Friends and colleagues remember him as a man of generosity, integrity, and enthusiasm—someone whose presence made a difference whether in business meetings, community service, or the skies.
“Johnny was more than a businessman,” said one longtime friend. “He was a mentor, a neighbor, and someone who cared deeply about this community. His loss is felt by everyone who knew him.”
The Medallion Pools team has pledged to continue his work and uphold the high standards of service and integrity that Mazza established over decades.
Authorities are reminding residents to exercise caution when operating UTVs and other recreational vehicles, particularly in rural areas.
