Police in Beckley are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that left a 72-year-old man dead on Saturday evening.
Officers were called to the 3600 block of Robert C. Byrd Drive after receiving reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. When first responders arrived, they found the victim, identified as William Clark, suffering from severe injuries.
Clark was transported to a nearby hospital by EMS, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to Deputy Chief David Allard, witnesses reported seeing the vehicle involved flee southbound from the scene immediately after the crash. Police have not released a description of the vehicle but are reviewing surveillance footage and gathering evidence from the area.
“This was a tragic loss of life, and our department is working diligently to identify and locate the driver responsible,” Allard said in a statement.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident or the fleeing vehicle to contact the Beckley Police Department or Crime Stoppers of West Virginia.
The investigation remains ongoing.
