Police Scotland and the wider policing community have paid heartfelt tribute to RPD Diesel, a retired Victim Recovery Dog, who has passed away after a long and brave life of service.
Known affectionately as the “Borgue Viking,” Diesel was donated to Strathclyde Police in 2012 and went on to serve across Scotland, assisting in vital recovery operations and supporting countless investigations.
During his distinguished career, Diesel was renowned for his calm temperament, exceptional skill, and unwavering dedication to duty.
In 2016, while exercising off duty, Diesel suffered a severe elbow injury, which ultimately led to his retirement the following year after numerous operations and more than a year of recovery.
In 2017, Diesel retired to live with his handler Janet and her family, where he enjoyed a peaceful and joyful life surrounded by love — and never far from his favourite ball.
In August 2025, Diesel was diagnosed with stage 1 kidney disease, and despite the best care, his health declined rapidly. His family made the heartbreaking decision to let him go, ensuring he passed peacefully and without pain.
Police Scotland and the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, who supported Diesel during his retirement by helping with medical costs, shared their appreciation for his years of service.
“We were proud to support Diesel throughout his retirement, helping to cover the cost of his X-rays, hydrotherapy, and pain relief injections. It was an honour to play a small part in giving him the comfortable and happy retirement he so deserved,” a spokesperson said.
Diesel is remembered fondly by his former colleagues and supporters as a loyal, gentle, and courageous dog whose work made a real difference.
