A 16-year-old boy who was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon in Chicago’s West Garfield Park neighborhood has been identified as David Mason Jr., according to authorities.
Police said the shooting occurred around 2:30 p.m. near West End Avenue and Keeler Avenue, after officers responded to reports of a person shot in the area.
When officers arrived, they learned that the victim had already been taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital by a private vehicle. Moments later, hospital staff notified police of a gunshot victim who had been dropped off. The teen, later identified as Mason, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head, chest, and arms, and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
According to investigators, Mason was standing on a sidewalk when shots were fired by an unknown assailant. It remains unclear whether the shooter was on foot or in a vehicle.
No suspects are currently in custody, and the Chicago Police Department’s Area Four detectives are conducting an active investigation.
Family and friends have expressed their heartbreak over the loss, asking the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers as they mourn the death of the 16-year-old.
