Police in Decatur are investigating a fatal shooting that left a 17-year-old dead Friday night, leading to the arrest of a local man on a preliminary charge of first-degree murder.
The Macon County Coroner’s Office identified the victim Monday morning as Tevon Beasley, 17, of Decatur.
According to authorities, officers responded to reports of a shooting late Friday in a residential area of the city. Upon arrival, they found Beasley suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly developed Nehemiah T. Meyers, also of Decatur, as a suspect. Meyers was taken into custody and booked on a preliminary charge of first-degree murder in connection with Beasley’s death.
Police have not released a possible motive, but say the investigation remains active and additional charges could follow pending review by the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Beasley’s family and friends are mourning his loss, describing him as a “bright and kind young man with a promising future.”
